Obituary

Charles Slaydon Murphree, Jr., age 95, of the Longview Community, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 12 in Murfreesboro. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Charles was a devout Christian who grew up in Horseshoe Bend near Coble in Hickman County and moved to the Longview community in 1960. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Annie Ruth Smith Murphree, his daughter, Virginia Gwen Murphree Lane, and his parents Charles Slaydon Murphree, Sr. and Mary Catherine Weatherspoon Murphree. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Charles Steven and Lisa Kay Fannin Murphree, Sr., son-in-law Larry Allen (Donna) Lane, grandchildren Lindsey Catherine (John) Lane Witten of Elizabethtown, KY, Kevin Anderson (Jessica) Lane of Riceville, Charles Steven (Tori) Murphree, Jr. of Tullahoma, Melissa Rene Murphree of Tullahoma, Daniel Ryan (Jean) Murphree of Nashville, and Grey Murphree of Honolulu, HI, and great-grandchildren Melody Ruth Witten, Madelyn Grace Witten and Charles Mackey Murphree.Charles is also survived by his dear friend, Maurine Dement.

Mr. Murphree was a 1948 graduate of Hickman County High School in Centerville where he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America where he advanced to the national level ear corn competition. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 advancing to the rank of Specialist, Third Class as a Military Policeman stationed at Fort Sheridan, IL. Charles met Annie Ruth while she served as a Home Extension agent in Hickman County. He loved the land, working as a hog, row crop and beef cattle farmer and serving as a member of the Federal Land Bank Board of Directors. Charles was also passionate about vegetable gardening, especially growing sweet potatoes. Mr. Murphree was a skilled carpenter and luthier, crafting fiddles, dulcimers and other musical instruments. He loved attending the Mountaineer Folk Festival with family each year at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Mr. Murphree was an active member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Longview Baptist Church, a member of the Duck River Beekeepers Association and a charter member of the Unionville Lions Club.

Visitation with family members will be Friday, May 15, 2026 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Osterhaus officiating. Burial will follow at Pressgrove Cemetery near Unionville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Longview Baptist Church Building Fund, 101 Cooper Road, Unionville, TN 37180.
