Cheryl Newell Whitehurst

Cheryl Rena Newell Whitehurst, age 59, of Chapel Hill, TN, went to dance with Jesus on Saturday, May 24, 2025. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving husband and daughters.

Born on September 4, 1965, in Lawrence County, TN, Cheryl was the daughter of Larry Odell Newell and Shirley June (Yates) Newell. She loved fishing, loud music, and spending sunny days at the beach and lake.

Cheryl worked for many years as a bookkeeper, but her favorite role began when she became a mom. She chose to stay home to raise her daughter, a job she cherished above all. Once her daughter was in school, Cheryl returned to work at one of her favorite places—Trinity Elementary School in Franklin, TN—serving as a school secretary. After retiring from the school system, she embraced the role of homemaker and proud “Mammie,” always available at a moment’s notice whenever her family needed her.

She found joy in pontoon rides, lake outings with friends, and beach trips with her entire family—moments filled with sunsets, laughter, and love. Cheryl was a member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church in Franklin, TN.

A bright light wherever she went, Cheryl will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors are her husband, Joey Whitehurst of Chapel Hill, TN; 2 daughters, Abbey (Aaron Burch) Whitehurst of Winchester, TN and Megan (Adam) Ladd of Lewisburg, TN; a son, Jimmy Stephens Whitehurst of Chapel Hill, TN; her parents, Larry Newell and Shirley Yates Newell of Lawrenceburg, TN; 2 grandchildren, Auryn Ladd and Dallas Whitehurst; a sister, Stephanie Brown of Helena, AL. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
