Verna Sims Frey, born December 22, 1938, passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2026. She lived her Christian faith daily through her love for others, her servant’s heart, and her steadfast devotion to friends and family.
Verna received her Bachelor’s degree in business education and accounting from Tennessee Tech University. She dedicated over thirty years of her life to education, primarily in the Marshall County School System as a teacher, administrator, and supervisor. Throughout her career, she touched countless lives through her leadership, compassion, and strong work ethic. Her passion for learning extended beyond the classroom, as she also led many travel groups to Europe, Washington D.C. and New York City, creating lasting memories for those fortunate enough to journey with her.
She found great joy in traveling, playing tennis, and spending time with family and friends. Verna had a remarkable gift for connection—she and her beloved husband, Al, formed lifelong friendships in every place they lived, including Virginia Beach, Virginia; Macon and Atlanta, Georgia; Lewisburg, Tennessee; Rogersville, Alabama; and Winter Haven, Florida.
Verna was an exceptional hostess and cook. She took pride in welcoming others into her home and made certain that no one ever left the Frey household hungry. Her kindness, vibrant spirit, and care for others left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Bertha Sims; her brother, Gene Sims; and her sister, Irene Sims Thurman.
Verna is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Alvin R. Frey; her sons and daughters-in-laws, Stephen and Naphtali Frey, and Michael and Elizabeth Frey; her granddaughters, Rebekah Frey and Josie Frey; and her nieces, Cindi Boyd, Melody Shaffield, and Tina Fisher.
Her legacy of love, service, and friendship will be cherished by her family, former students, colleagues, and the many friends whose lives she so deeply touched.
The family will have a private service at a later date.
