Our History

Lawrence Funeral Home and Cremation Services had its beginning on May 19, 1939 when Thomas H. Lawrence established and opened the business. Exactly one year later the facility was destroyed by fire and the same year the business reopened in another location in Chapel Hill. In 1941 Thomas was joined in the business by his younger brother, Garrett H. Lawrence. Together, Thomas and Garrett led the business to evolve into one of the most respected funeral homes in Middle Tennessee. Since its beginning Lawrence Funeral Home has always strived to keep abreast of changing funeral customs and consumer desires, which has resulted in several expansions of the business. In 1953 Lawrence Funeral Home moved into a completely new facility which it still occupies today. In 1986 the facility was expanded and in 2004 a major renovation was completed with the addition of a modern formal chapel and renovation of the visitation rooms. In 2002, Lawrence Funeral Home officially changed its name to Lawrence Funeral Home and Cremation Services to reflect its accommodation of the many families who are choosing cremation services for their family members.

 Lawrence Funeral Home has always strived to provide compassionate, dignified and professional service to every family it serves regardless of their circumstances. People from all walks of life have visited the funeral home for visitations and funerals. In 1972, President and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson, Vice-President Spiro Agnew, and several other dignitaries attended funeral services here for Governor Buford Ellington who was a personal friend of Thomas and Garrett. Services for veterans killed in action in every major conflict beginning with World War II and including the present war in Iraq have been conducted at our facility.
